I haven’t done much with the kitchen as far as decorating. Mainly because I know the work will require some general contractor work with new cabinetry and stuff. Meanwhile, I did do a couple things to give it a fresher look.
Here is the realtor picture. The aluminum blinds were badly stained and probably original to the house. I updated with roller shades and just this weekend, I added some color with the valances.
Once I figure out a color for this area, I’ll rehang them so they’re even but for now it will due.
I had been having issues with the fridge that came with the house—water was leaking from the freezer into the fridge on a regular basis. That, and there were moments when it sounded like the compressor was laboring. I had a feeling that it meant the fridge was probably not going to last too long so I began researching when the water issue grew. I knew that I was going to need a new fridge eventually—the freezer space was too small for my food and for Floyd & Puck’s food. Plus, I wanted a fridge with a water dispenser.
I looked at different brands and styles finally deciding a side by side was truly the best type for my needs. I created a huge spreadsheet and added all the specs from different brands. The winner was a close-out Samsung model for under $1000. It was energy star rated—using less energy than the current one and had a lot of space. It got delivered on Friday and looks great! (though I think I need to do more shopping)
I hope to get that recycled through the city and get $50 back.
There’s even a wine rack in there! The LED lighting is very nice too.
Right now, Emser Strands Olive is the top choice for floor tiles. I’m looking at 12’x24’ ones for that modern, cleaner look.
I need to check the local Daltile showroom though just to eliminate their choices. Some of their stuff is made in Oklahoma so it would be nice to stay local.
For the spare bath wall tile, I’ve got some ideas when I was at the Emser showroom yesterday but they’re natural stone and unless I can get them reclaimed, I really don’t want newly quarried stuff (trying to be as earth friendly as I can). I’ll check the re-Store to see what they have as well.
Ideally, I’d like to get rectangular tiles (like subway ones) but a more modern palette or texture just in keeping with the modern, yet retro look I like.
I saw this at World Market today and I think I can get it for my kitchen area. Even once I’m done with the reno, the colors will work too.
This is, however, one of those purchases I’m not being impulsive about.
Kitchen Reno idea –
While the kitchen reno will be a few years down the line, I’ve been gathering ideas already. The latest is inspired by the above picture. Clean, white cabinetry, stainless steel appliances and red engineered stone or recycled glass countertop. For the back splash, I’m thinking a soft grey or something.
I think it would be just enough color to make the tiny kitchen pop without it being overwhelming.
